God on Monday
Read previous

‘When Israel was a child, I loved him…but the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me’ (Hosea 11.1-3)

Reflection

In our work, in our business, or in whatever we do that takes up most of our time, are our hearts moving toward or away from God? As God pulls on our heartstrings, do we yield, or do we pull in the opposite direction?

When we visit doctors, they often get close to us with a stethoscope to listen to our hearts. We need to let God lean close to listen to our hearts. We need to allow God to hear its irregularities and reveal to us the things that need fixing. For God is the ultimate heart surgeon.

Pulling in the opposite direction to God can be a sign that our hearts are preoccupied with the things of the earth rather than of heaven (Colossians 3.2). The prophet Hosea shows how sensitive God is to this, as God’s heart is always towards us: ‘I myself taught Israel how to walk…I led them with cords of kindness and love’. And then, in one of the Bible’s most beautiful pictures of parenthood, God says, ‘I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks‘ (Hosea 11.3-4).

God is cheek to cheek with us!

Does this level of intimacy set your heart racing towards God and embracing God’s will for your life? Or do you find your heart beats fainter, due perhaps to hope deferred or to weariness in doing good?

Response

Take some time to do a heart check. Journal and reflect for a few minutes on these two questions:

  • Have I become discouraged due to weariness and unfulfilled hopes?
  • What can I do, listen to, or read today that will reignite my heart’s passion for the things of God?

Prayer

Dear Lord, too often I have allowed myself to be drawn away from my first love. Reignite my heart with a passion for you. Rekindle my love for your kingdom. May my life and work on earth reflect your will in heaven. In Jesus' name, Amen.
